The Author - Paul Ford

My day job

I am the Chairman of the De Group. Five specialist businesses operating predominantly in central London. We also have a specialist Rail recruitment business, Deploy which operates nationally. We have three contracting firms, Deconstruct, specialising in structurally and logistically challenging engineering projects. Decontaminate, specialist asbestos removal contractors and De Group Contracting a specialist main contractor. We also have a health and safety and principal designer business, Derisk. Links to all can be found at  www.degroupuk.com

I am also Chairman of NESST, a recognised blue light provision that supports the Emergency Services, particularly when USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) are deployed to search for persons trapped or suspected trapped, or where vital infrastructure is threatened. www.nesst-response.com

My intentions for the book

I wrote Dangerous Structure - Emergency Response, because I wanted other industry specialists to benefit from the lessons I have learnt and to also try to put some consistency into the general approach of what is a very dangerous responsibility. I hope I have achieved something near that and in doing so also created a back-story that explains our response at many dangerous structures including the London Riots of 2011 and of course Grenfell Tower......

My career to date

I started in specialist deconstruction and structural alteration in the late 1980's and really got my first taste of dangerous structures in 1994. Since 2005 I became the go-to person in London working with the London Boroughs and Emergency Services and HSE. At the time of writing the book (2020) I had attended several hundred incidents and have worked very closely with the emergency services for a number of years, culminating in the formation of NESST. www.nesst-response.com
